Abstract

Although crucial for the translation as a process and as a phenomenon, reading is not systematically examined in the translation studies: the main issue considered and analyzed is the existence or not of a particular mode of reading during the translation process. Most academics concur in the fact that reading in order to translate is different from ordinary, silent reading and this paper deals with this particularity in order to stress the professional aspect of the translator's reading. An effort is made to show, through the examination of multiple forms of professional reading and concrete examples, that the translator's reading is mainly professional and marks the whole reading activity of the translator, who cannot read even for pleasure without identifying translation difficulties and solutions.
